BC Muslim School is committed to raising the literacy interests, competence and standards of our students. For the last few years, we have been implementing the Smart Writing Program and the 6 Traits + 1 Writing Program. There is a strong focus on linking reading & writing, teaching the writing process and scrutinizing with the purpose of acquiring the traits of a good writer.
With sharp focus and undaunted efforts, we are beginning to reap the profits. This year, 18 poems from Grade 6 and 11 poems from Grade 5 have been selected for publication in Canada Young Writers Poetry Collection 2013. Other students from Grades 1 and 2 and Grade 5 again, have also published a collection of their writings. These include Friends & Winter’s Poem in Grade 1, Haiku in Grade 2, Proud to Be a Muslim in Grade 5.
April is now designated as our Literacy Month with a range of activities such as Spelling Bee, Writing Competition, Book Reports and school wide D.E.A.R., Handwriting/ Printing Competitions, just to name a few. Throughout the year, we also have other literacy enhancement activities. For example, in October this school year, we invited Karen Autio, an author of children’s historical novels for a presentation.
This year, we are very proud of our FSA results:
