Surrey, BC – On December 29th & 30th, Young Ummah British Columbia Muslim Association held their 6th annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament with the help of the Almighty Allah.

President of BCMA, Iltaf Sahib in his opening remarks said, “Young Ummah BCMA 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament presents a platform for our Muslim youth to come together and enjoy a weekend of fun, safe, and healthy competition under the guidance of responsible volunteers. This two-day event gives an opportunity for our youth to display their skills, make new friends and at the same time remembering the almighty creator by praying together in unity.”

This year’s event saw an increase in community engagement, support, and exposure due to the hard work and determination of Young Ummah BCMA Coordinator, Br Tahir Sattar. Held at Princess Margaret Secondary School, the event was a major success. Young Ummah BCMA has been organizing these tournaments for the past six years to help keep Muslim youth off the streets and on the right path. By involving our youth in sports, Young Ummah BCMA also helps keep youth closer to Allah.

Imtiaz Asin – Vice President of Youth Development Services of BCMA & Young Ummah BCMA stated,

“Youth need safe spaces and interactive activities to better connect to the community, and this is just that an event that strengthens our brotherhood and brings us closer to Islam "

This year’s tournament includes three divisions and over 120 youth. The 2K Ballers played their heart out and won the Young Stars division (12-14). In the All-Star Division (15-18) the Cookies and Cream team were victorious. In Elite Division (19 & up) the final was an incredibly closely contested game between The Splash Bros and Alhamdulillah for Everything (AFE) that ultimately came down to the last shot with Alhamdulillah for Everything (AFE) ultimately taking the title.  Hassan Phelps was selected as tournament MVP.

Since the inception of this tournament, it has become more and more competitive every year. Such talents as Farrukh Munshey, Jobair Satari, Afan Saleem, Bilal Naqshbandy, and Hassan Phelps have won the MVP award for the elite division.  The MVP winner not only takes home a trophy but also earns the opportunity to do Umrah with the Young Ummah BCMA Umrah Group. Businesses and individuals in our community sponsor the Umrah pilgrimage. It is an incredible honour for these young adults to go on this trip not only because it is rejuvenating to the Iman(faith) but it also a valuable education tool for our youth further.

Young Ummah BCMA’s intention with all their events is to steer youth away from negative situations and put them in a position where they can be successful. Youth participants learn about teamwork, comradery and Islam.

What’s next for Young Ummah BCMA? From February 3rd – 17th they will take a group to Umrah 2019.  Stay tuned!
