Open Mosque Day across BC

On Saturday February 16th, hundreds of British Columbian’s had a chance to visit Mosques around the province in an Open Mosque Day organized by BC Muslim Association.

Although mosques are open to everyone, any day of the week The “Open Mosque Day” will provide an opportunity to “bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims” said Adnan Akiel, Open Mosque B.C. Program Manager.

About nine major Mosques across B.C. took part from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ismail Mohamed-Nur, Imam of the local mosque said “We are here to get rid of any misconceptions people may have and also to meet our neighbours.”

Imam Yahya Momla of Masjid Al Salam was eager to host people to come and see the beautiful open space inside his masjid, which features wooden columns throughout and lots of natural light.

Meanwhile, in Kelowna, the public was invited into the Kelowna Islamic Centre's new building.

"We're very happy to have this bigger place," said Hamid Butt, one of the board directors at the centre.

Brad who has been living near the Surrey Jamea Masjid was delighted to visit the Mosque and said, “it was great to see the prayer, it was very good and very educational.”

Hon. Harry Bains British Columbia's Minister of Labour said he “is very pleased it is happening in his constituency.”

Hon. Jinny Sims shared her views about the open house saying, “Today is about showing what Islam is all About, We are living in a multicultural country and learn more about each other.”

Among other dignitaries visiting the Surrey Jamea Masjid and Masjid ur Rahmah were MLA Jagrup Brar, MLA Rachna Singh and MLA Garry Begg.

The BC provincial Government also presented the Surrey Jamea Masjid and Masjid ur Rahmah with a certificate of Appreciation for hosting the Open Mosque Day.
