Hundreds of Surrey Residents send a strong message "Not hate but Love"

March 17th,2019 - Hundreds of Surrey Residents holding flowers and placards denouncing hate, came together as gesture of hope and love for humanity.

The rally was one of many organized by ad hoc group consisting of (Mahwish Yousaf, Shahzad Nazir and Furquan Gehlan, Asad Syed) formed to accommodate the outpouring support of Canadians that have come out to forms ring at mosques, dropping flowers at mosque and just dropping by to assure that they are mourning with the Muslim community.  Iltaf Sahib, President of the BC Muslim Association thanked everyone for their continuous support. He said, “It is not hate but Love that will unite us.”

Among the gathering were members of BC Legislature Hon. Jinny Sims, Hon. Harry Bains, MLA Rachna Singh, Mla Jagrup Brar. From the City of Surrey, Councillor Brenda Lock welcomed the people gathered and said, “We all know that kindness compassion always wins.”

Maple Ridge Councillor Ahmed A. Yousef while addressing the crowd suggested that it is our instinct to assume we are better then the other.  He asked, “What makes one better then the other? It is how much they serve their community, how good they do for others.”

Rabbi Lora director of studies at Vancouver school of theology representing the Jewish community said, “Our community stands and feels with our Islamic cousins.”

Hon. Jinny Sims said, “I think we all can agree terrorism has no religions.”

Hon. Harry Bains on behalf of the members of BC Legislature said, “This attack was on humanity, today we are standing shoulder to shoulder, we are united and the second message is that we need to conquer hate with love and respect each others beliefs.”

There is another vigil scheduled to take place on Friday March 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Rd).
