N. Carolina DA: No death penalty for 3 Muslim student deaths

DURHAM, N.C. — A North Carolina prosecutor is scrapping the death penalty for a man charged with killing three young Muslims in hopes of getting the four-year-old case to trial in July.
District Attorney Satana DeBerry said she plans to proceed with a potential life prison sentence to speed up the first-degree murder case against Craig Hicks. He’s accused of killing 23-year-old University of North Carolina dental student Deah Barakat, his 21-year-old wife Yusor Abu-Salha, and her 19-year-old sister Razan Abu-Salha inside their condo.
Their father testified this week to a congressional hearing on hate crimes. The victims’ families said Hicks expressed hateful comments that the women observed their faith by wearing head scarves.
Police said in 2015 that Hicks was angered by a dispute over a parking space in their shared complex.
