Canadian Rabbi arrested for helping Palestinians fill potholes

5-05-2019

A Prominent Rabbi has been arrested among sixteen others on May 3rd in Israel for filling potholes in an old dirt track. The track is the only link to the outside world for an isolated and endangered communities which are under constant violent attack by settlers.

Rabbi David Mivasair was a Vancouver resident and moved to Hamilton 2 years ago.

On his visit to Israel this year, Rabbi took part in fixing the road with over100 Jews under the leadership of local Palestinian partners to the South Hebron Hills.

He said on his facebook post, “We helped them fix up a small, old dirt track road that is the only way people in about a dozen endangered, isolated communities can get in and out to larger towns nearby. Under constant pressure for decades by sometimes-lethally violent settlers to abandon their homes and land -- as other communities have done -- these Palestinians asked for help in materially securing their existence on the land and in getting their story known by the wider world. I believe we've done both.”

Rabbi David Mivasair is requesting all Canadian, “to do the single most concrete thing that I think Canadians can at this time to support the Palestinian struggle: sign the Parliamentary petition to the Minister of National Revenue to revoke the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund Canada.”

He states, “The JNF acquires land in Palestine for the exclusive use of Jews. And, it raises about $30 million per year in Canada as tax deductible donations.”

In January this year, Independent Jewish Voices launched a Parliamentary petition to the Minister of National Revenue to audit the JNF and revoke its charitable status if it is found in violation. The petition is open to be signed only until May 9. After that, NDP Critic for National Revenue, MP Pierre-Luc Dussealt will submit the petition to Parliament and the government will be obliged to respond. The more signatures it has, the more seriously it will be taken.
