Bethany-Newton United Church hosts Muslim Community for Iftar

On Saturday June 1st Bethany-Newton United Church hosted their first iftar dinner for the Muslim community in Surrey.

The iftar was to honor the arrival of an Afghan Family from Afghanistan. Three years ago the Bethany-Newton United Church had sponsored the family as part of their refugee sponsorship program.  The family  arrived in Canada few weeks ago and the iftari program was held to welcome them to the community.

Rev. Juanita Lowe had invited the members of the Muslim community and said this is “an excellent opportunity for all of us to welcome the family to their new home in Canada.”

The program was well organized with the relatives of the family, suppling the halal meat and rice for this iftar and members of the church contributing a favorite vegetarian dish.

Adhan was called out at time of Iftar followed by Salatul Maghreb- Sunset prayers inside the main prayer hall of the church.

After dinner Rev. Juanita Lowe presented gifts to the family.

The initiative by the Bethany-Newton United Church  reminds us the importance of sharing meals and smiles. The Iftar served as an expression of their gratitude to the Muslim community.

Representatives of the Womens chapter of BCMA Masjid Rahmah who attended the program felt the program opened the doors for future get togethers. Renuma Ali, Surreyeast women Chapter chairperson said, “This type of programs create bonds and stronger ties with different faith groups and we look forward to invite the church at our iftar next years.
