Eid-Ul-Fitr celebrations Hosted by Surrey BC NDP MLA's

On Monday, June 10th, 2019, BC NDP South Fraser Government Caucaus MLA’s from Surrey celebrated their decade old tradition of inviting the local Muslim community members for an Eid gathering.

Mla Harry Bains who recounted how the event used to take place at his constituency office saying, “We started with just 20 people and today we are filling the whole hall.” The eid tradition open house has now over the years has become much bigger attracting over 500 people.

The Program was hosted by MLA Rachna Singh and MLA Ravi Khalon.  Imam Muaz started the program with Quran recitation and a thank you note followed by brief about the importance of Eid by Sister Tanveer.  Br. Yousef Amer Barakat thanked the NDP Mla's for hosting the event on behalf of the Muslim community.

On behalf of the local Muslim community, Alameen Post, would like to thank the NDP MLA's from Surrey, Mr. Harry Bains, Mr. Jagrup Brar, Mr. Ravi Kahlon, Mr. Bruce Ralston, Mr. Gary Begg, Ms. Jinny Sims, Ms. Rachna Singh, for arranging an Eid-al-Fitr celebrations dinner.

It is evident that the NDP has been successful in building A bond and close working relationship between the NDP Representatives and the local Muslim community. Muslim community members equally recognize the efforts made by the NDP members to represent the interests of the Muslim community.

We hope to see this relationship of mutual trust and understanding to get stronger with time. We wish Premier Horgan, the NDP Caucus, and NDP Team Surrey all the best for coming years.

The Premier’s statement on Eid al-Fitr was read out by MLA Ravi.

“Ramadan teaches us the importance of gratitude, while reminding us to be compassionate toward those who are less fortunate. As traditional prayers, food and well-wishes are exchanged, the universal values of unity, charity and peace are also celebrated on Eid al-Fitr. These are values this government shares.

“Whether through volunteerism, charitable giving or working in local leadership roles, the Muslim community in B.C. has helped build a better province for everyone.

“Today, and every day, our government is committed to standing up for diversity, inclusion and mutual respect.

“On behalf of every British Columbian, I wish all those who observed this holy month a joyous end of Ramadan.

“Eid Mubarak!”

MLA Rachna Singh thanked everyone, “A big thank you to everyone who joined us last night as we celebrated Eid. It was our pleasure to host all of you and celebrate the end of Ramadan. Eid Mubarak!”
