Dear Community

The Islamic Society of British Columbia is deeply concerned for the loss of life and the suppression of liberties in Egypt as we report the news of the tragic death of Dr. Mohammed Morsi, may Allah have mercy on him.

Dr. Morsi was a resident of California and a professor at Cal State Northridge. He was widely recognized as the only democratically elected president through a free and fair process in the modern history of Egypt following the popular revolution of 2011 which ousted Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled Egypt for nearly three decades.

Dr. Morsi was deposed in a military coup, placed in solitary confinement without access to proper medical care for his deteriorating health and subjected to inhumane treatment.

Dr. Morsi, who was 67 years old, died after suffering a heart attack on June 17, 2019 while appearing in a Cairo court where he was on trial on espionage charges, Egyptian state television reported.

His family and attorneys said in 2018 that he had been denied medical treatment for a range of conditions including diabetes and that he had been suffering from a recurring diabetic coma. In the same year, a group of British lawmakers sought to visit Mr. Morsi in prison in order to evaluate his condition and concluded that he had been subjected to torture-like treatment in detention, including the denial of medical treatment.

Amnesty International has called for a transparent investigation into the death of Dr, Morsi that could be attributed to his ill-treatment, demanding accountability for his lack of access to his lawyers or a doctor.

As Canadian Muslims, we hope to see all Muslim majority countries move from dictatorships to democracies in the interest of their people and move from police states to free societies, so that their citizens can aspire to have a promising and dignified future.

The Islamic Society of British Columbia offers condolences to the Muslim and the Egyptian Communities on this sad day and will offer Salaatul Janaza Ghaib (in absentia) after Friday prayers on June 21, 2019 at Masjid Al Hidaya.
