Eid al Fitr celebrations at Princes Margaret Secondary

6-27-2019

On Tuesday, June 11th, 2019 Princes Margaret Secondary School held an Eid al Fitr celebration for the first time.

The purpose of this event was to spread awareness about Eid and Ramadan, clear any misunderstandings about Islam and break down some of the stereotypes that Muslims are portrayed as in the media. "As muslim students we are constantly asked questions about why we fast, why Muslim girls wear Hijab, and what Ramadan and Eid is all about," said one of the organizers.

This event helped students understand more about our religion and give them a better understanding about what its like to be a Muslim. We thought that an event like this will benefit people not only at an individual level but also as a community.

Muslim students worked hard for months planning this event and it was a huge success. We had various stations that include try on a hijab, try a date, henna, information about Eid al Fitr and Ramadan and served food to the students and staff members.

As a team, the organizers spent the month of Ramadan preparing for this event by fundraising out of school time, taking out time to make announcements, posters and inviting school community to come join the event.

The organizers would like to take this time to give a huge thank you to all their amazing sponsors who contributed to their success.

Thank you to Abu Bakr Islamic Center for donating dates, Alameen Post, Bengal Fish & Pizza for the pizza, ICNA Vancouver for the brochures, Lahori Sweets and Restaurant for the samosas and pakoras , Masjid Ur-Rahmah, Safari Grill for the pizza, Surrey Catering for the pakoras and drinks and Surrey Jamea Masjid for your support.

Without their help the event would not have been possible. The organizers would also like to thank their vice principal Ms. Cynthia Weldon for her ongoing support throughout the planning process and all the other school admin for allowing the students to hold this event.

All the parents and families who supported the Eid ul Fitr celebrations from the beginning to the very end, "we want to express our thanks to all of you. Thank you for everyone’s support and Insha’Allah we hope to do many more events like this in the future."
