BRITISH COLUMBIA'S SIKH GURDUWA COUNCIL STANDS WITH KASHMIR

8-21-2019

On August 15, the  Sikh Community organized a protest infront of the Indian Consulate in Vancouver. The protest rally was to highlight the Indian Govt. Decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Indian Constituion which is seen as a succession of Kashmir to India. The BC Gurduwara Council which represents the Sikh community’s holy places throughtout BC colaborated the protest with several Sikh organizations at 11am.

The purpose of the protest was to bring to light the ongoing human rights violations suffered by Sikhs and other minorities within India and the ongoing occupation of Punjab, Kashmir and other peoples within India who are struggling for self-determination.

They said, “The protest is a symbol of solidarity amongst minorities within the Indian state and an opportunity to showcase to the international community the fascist, divisive and discriminatory agenda of the current government of India under Narendra Modi.

The Indian state has committed multiple genocides of minorities since obtaining its independence from the British in 1947. From Tens of thousands of extra-judicial murders and enforced disappearances in Punjab and Kashmir to the daily subjugation, rape, torture and murder of members of the Dalit community, India has fallen remarkably short of anything that could be considered a secular democracy as it claims to be.

The impunity granted to politicians, police and military officials allows murderers & rapists to walk freely and continue to to their victims continuously. What justice can be expected in a country where the sitting Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) was involved in the genocide of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002 (where thousands of Muslims were brutally murdered and hundreds of women raped) and over 40% of the sitting MPs in the nations parliament have criminal cases registered against them.”

Members of other minority communities also joined the protest and came forward to show solidarity in this mutual respectful cause which raised awareness around the ongoing issues faced by all of the communities within India.
