The Voices of Muslim Women Present the 2019 VMW Award Winners!

October 29-2019 - Voices of Muslim Women (VMW) announced the winners for their third annual VMW Awards on Saturday October 26th at Aria Banquet Hall. The evening not only honoured the achievements of the 10 phenomenal winners, but was also a celebration of all Muslim women in the community. The VMW Awards are given annually to self identifying Muslim women in British Columbia who excel socially and professionally in the various award categories. Each year, VMW calls out for members of the community to nominate women they believe are deserving of this prestigious award. A panel of award judges shortlist the finalists and select the winner for each category after much deliberation and consideration.

This year's winners are:

  • Allies of Muslim Women - Janice Morris
  • Arts & Culture Award - Noor Fadel
  • Athletic Excellence Award - Rakiia Lolieva
  • Business & Entrepreneurial Leadership Award - Sidra Subzwari ? Lifetime Achievement Award - Dr. Amera Murabit
  • Media & Entertainment Award - Iayisha Khan
  • Social Justice Award - Hira Rashid
  • STEM Award - Hanieh Shakeri
  • Young Women in Distinction Award - Zeba Khan
  • Champion of Women Award - Kuresa Buksh


"My heart is filled with so much joy at seeing all of the amazing nominees and winners being celebrated for their successes. I am very pleased with how the evening went, and I hope everyone that attended was inspired," said Aisha Amijee, Executive Director of Voices of Muslim Women. "It is my honour to congratulate this year's winners on their amazing achievements."

“Tonight was such a powerful moment for so many incredible Muslim women... I was truly honoured for being nominated amongst the many amazing women in our vast community,” said Sabrina Samy, Business & Entrepreneurial Leadership Award nominee and owner of Shy Beauty Studio.

Presenting sponsor Arifa Azad from Bombay Collection was all smiles as she said “ Congratulations to VMW on such an incredible and successful event. I will happily support the event next year, keep up the good work!”

The VMW Awards Gala was a black tie event that was open to all. Besides the main awards presentation, the evening featured a full three course meal, and amazing performances by Flare Dance Group, Canadabkeh, and Jason & Marisa Gold. There was a red carpet, mocktail reception, and a fantastic photo exhibition presented by Dhia Photography.
