On Friday 22 November, A Jewish man travelling with his family were subjected to anti-Semitic comments by a fellow passenger on the tube. He was shouting that the ‘Jews started the slave trade’ and also blamed Jews for enslaving blacks and said they were responsible for the 9/11 terror attacks.

The whole incident was captured and shared on social media by Chris Atkins.

A Muslim passenger mother-of-two Asma Shuweikh, 36, stepped in to confront the man.

The Jewish victim said: ‘We are certain that without her intervention and distraction, he would have continued his abuse which could have escalated to physical violence. I would like to meet Asma in person to thank her.’

He added: ‘On the one hand my wife, my children and I were subject to vile abuse in a full Tube carriage, however I am grateful for those who stood up for me.’ He also said that antisemitism is still rife, ‘it just happens that a small two minute snippet of this long episode was caught on camera’.

The jewish man finally got a chance to meet Asma Shuweikh from Birmingham on Monday November 25th for coffee in Manchester bearing flowers and thanking her in person for her intervention.

After her meeting Asma said: “He came and gave me beautiful flowers and we sat down and had a coffee and we were talking about our experiences and our backgrounds.

“It was very nice. It was lovely. We’re going to keep in touch,” she added.

“My faith is what drives me to do this. We always encourage to speak out against injustice,” she added.
