“We Get Real about Addiction”

In an attempt to increase awareness about substance abuse and destigmatize drug use Muslim Care Centre had it’s first seminar “We Get Real about Addiction” held at the Richmond Jamea Mosque on the evening of November 29th. The heartfelt addiction seminar was unique for the Muslim community and was very well received by a crowd of nearly 100 attendees, including children.

 

The event began with powerful real-life stories of addiction from our own Muslim community members, followed by certified addiction counsellors and social workers debunking the common myths around substance abuse. The event concluded with a Q&A panel where attendees were able to ask questions anonymously. The gathering provided to be a great opportunity for individuals to learn more about addiction, prevention, and to bring forward solutions great way to destigmatize drug use.

Following the event, people  reached out to MCC Addiction Recovery team for additional information and resources, which is a great indicator of success and shows the need to discuss substance abuse in our community.

MCC is working in collaboration with local masajid to host seminars to help create a supportive environment within our own Muslim community for individuals to seek out help. MCC strives to provide a non-judgemental, safe and compassionate approach to individuals struggling with addiction.

 MCC is  taking  the conversation about addiction across the lower-mainland.Their next addiction seminar is scheduled at MAC located at 2122 Kingsway for December 14th at 8.00 pm. MCC encourages all individuals to partake in this seminar to better help yourself, loved ones, friends or co-workers in their journey to health and happiness.

MCC is  looking for men and women who have overcome addiction, as well as addiction professionals, who would like to be apart of this movement to help break cultural barriers that prevent people from seeking help.
