1-20-2020

The Quebec City Mosque, Islamic Relief Canada and the National Council of Canadian Muslims collaborate to continue to support the victims of the families, and call on all Canadians and leaders to wear a green square on January 29, 2020

(Quebec City - January 17, 2020)

As we approach the third anniversary of the January 29, 2017 attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec (CCIQ), today we are launching the Green Square Campaign. We are calling on all Canadians to?wear a green square?and to pause and reflect on what this day means for our country.??

We are calling on Canadians to ensure that the families of the victims, some of whom lost the sole breadwinner, no longer have to live on less than $900 a month with several dependents.

“The Green Square Campaign is a project to initiate an annual commemoration of the January 29 mosque attack. We ask all Canadians to wear a green felt square, symbolizing the green carpets?of the Quebec City mosque?that?were soaked in the blood of those who fell that day.?We ask them to wear it as a symbol of hope and peace, to show that we, as a country, are committed to?never letting this happen again,” said Boufeldja Benabdallah, President of the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre.

“January 29 is a day that will forever remind us of the sheer hatred and intolerance that led to the attack on the Quebec City mosque. We will never forget about when Islamophobia visited our doors” said Stephen Brown, NCCM Board Member, “However, January 29 also marked the beginning of a journey for the survivors of the attack, the families of the victims, and the mosque. This journey hasn’t been easy. It’s a journey with many struggles along the way, struggles that sometimes seem insurmountable. We want people across the country, as well as all political leaders, to join this campaign and wear a green square to show them that they are not walking this path alone.”

“We know that when Canadians are called to action in the service of those in need, they always come through. I've spoken to the women the six men left behind in the Quebec mosque attack and they need our help. We call on all Canadians to stand shoulder to shoulder with the families of the victims of the mosque attack by donating whatever they can so we can restore their sense of security and faith," said Reyhana Patel, Head of External Relations, Islamic Relief Canada.
