BCMA Surrey Delta Branch holds seminar on addiction

1-21-2020

On Jan 18th 2020, the Muslim Care Centre’s addictions Recovery Program outreach team held a panel discussion at Surrey Jamea Masjid hosted by BCMA & Surrey/Delta Jamea Mosques. MCC is breaking the stigma around addiction within Muslim communities in the lower mainland. Our outreach team is hosting events at your religious spaces and community centre’s where "We Get Real about Addictions".

Muslim Care Centre (MCC), located at 140 E Hastings St in Downtown Vancouver, is a non-profit that has emerged through the support of a consortium of Muslim organizations, businesses and individuals. Striving to serve, share and counsel, MCC focuses on daily food distribution, addiction (drugs/alcohol), mental health, women’s counselling, chiropractic services, and daily prayer services. MCC is mostly operated by young Muslim adults who volunteer on a daily basis to serve the Downtown Eastside Community and Surrey Whalley Strip which includes 300-400 Muslims as per preliminary estimates. The organizational mission is to  elevate social, emotional and spiritual well-being of humanity through ground-level efforts of faith-inspired Muslims. Muslim Care centre’s core values include faith, selflessness and piety.

The panel was conducted by various health professionals, social workers, counsellors and community members with lived experience in addictions. The stories shared during the event left an empowering message for the audience. It’s time to break the silence and have a conversation about the realities of our communities. It's time to break the communal silence and have conversations about the diverse realities that play out within our communities. For too long, we have been silent. This program attempts to link community members and families struggling with addiction with a new sense of hope and bridge the gap within the wider Muslim Community. We are in our initial stage of the project as we hope to enable holistic practices and provide support to the most in need.

Our mission is to support self-identified Muslims who are in addiction (chemical) by providing resources for education and information, confidential phone line support, access to Alcoholics Anonymous/ Narcotics Anonymous meetings and SMART recovery programs and crisis intervention. The Muslim Care Centre is here for you and we are ready to listen and support you and your family through your journey of addiction.
