New Westminster City Councillor Chuck Puchmayr to bring a motion to denounce CAA

3-04-2020

On Sunday March 1st, IAPA organized a rally in solidarity with the victims of the Delhi Pogrom where more than 40 people have been killed in communal riots most of them being Muslims.

The violence erupted after Hindu goons incited by politicians of the ruling BJP party roamed streets of Delhi under the protection of the Police to attack and disrupt peaceful protests against the CAA and NRC.

Indian parliament in December 2019, passed the CAA, to grant fast-track citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. The CAA had led to widespread protests in India, starting with northeastern states.

The UN human rights commissioner has highlighted several times that CAA would be discriminatory and violates India’s commitments made under international law.

Earlier in December 2019, OHCHR had described the citizenship amendment act as “fundamentally discriminatory”.

In the Sunday rally over 50 people gathered and talked about the illegality of the Law and pleaded the Indian Govt. to repeal the CAA.

Among them New Westminster City Councillor Chuck Puchmayr, who told the crowd that he intends to bring a motion in the City Council to denounce the CAA. He urged the Canadian Government to break the silence on the matter.

Other community members who spoke at the event were Annie Ohana, Hardeep Singh Nijjar from Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, Gian Singh Gill from Dashmesh Darbar Gurdwara and Ranjit Singh Khalsa from Banda Singh Bahadur Society, besides Muslim activists Auzeb Manzoor, Dawood Ismail, Imtiaz Popat and Tarik Kiyani.

IAPI members and supporters Rakesh Kumar, Amrit Diwana, Sayyad Wajahat and Harbir Rathi also spoke at the event.
