New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh “PM Trudeau must denounce the situation.”

3-04-2020

Canada's New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh has again taken a lead to speak out on the pogrom against Muslims in Delhi incited by India’s Ruling BJP Party and their banned RSS outfits.

He shared a news coverage by Global BC where Gurpreet Singh-an independent journalist was threatened by RSS members at UBC for speaking out on violence against Muslims.

In a Facebook post, Gurpreet wrote, "Last night I was threatened by a Modi supporter after an event at UBC. I was invited to speak on CAA... Matter will be taken up with police by organisers, but I just want to caution everyone about growing threat of Hindutva extremists in Canada."

Jagmeet Singh stated, “Hate unchallenged spreads like wildfire. PM Modi and BJP have allowed anti-Muslim mobs to flame the fire of hate and division with impunity. This week, 27 lives were taken in New Delhi and Canadian journalists have been threatened. PM Trudeau must denounce the situation.”

This is not the first time Jagmeet has spoken on the human right violation against Muslims in India.

Last August Jagmeet while speaking on the situation in Kashmir and the Indian media reports that things are becoming normal said, “If you have something good happening you want people to come and share it but you are shutting down cell phones, internet, phone lines and you are shutting down media. I have been very loud and clear. I am getting backlash because people don’t like me to criticize India but I am never afraid to do that.”

In August the NDP party had also released a press Statement on the Status of Human Rights in Kashmir.

''New Democrats are deeply concerned by reports of the Indian government’s crackdown in recent days in Kashmir. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently took steps to revoke section 370 of the Indian constitution, which granted Kashmir considerable autonomy, and moved to arrest top Kashmiri political leaders, deploy thousands of troops, impose a shutdown of telephone and internet services and restrict peaceful assembly.

Like Amnesty International and other civil society groups, we are troubled by such actions, which provide fertile ground for more human rights abuses in a region where the people of Kashmir regularly suffer abuses such as excessive force, arbitrary detention and the lack of due process, and communications blackouts.

The Liberal government must find the courage to firmly communicate these human rights concerns to Indian authorities. We must always have a foreign policy that is based on human rights and international law, not one that pays lip service to a “rules-based international order” without actually standing up for those rules.''
