Adhan – A public Call to prayer at various Mosques in BC

On May 4th, 2020, the 11th of Ramadan 1441H, members of the local community in the heart of Victoria City witnessed and heard the first public adhan from the Muadhin (caller to prayer) of the BCMA Masjid Al-Iman. This was a historic milestone for the Muslim community on Vancouver Island and for Muslims throughout BC. The City of Victoria has allowed the adhan to take place between the times of 7am and 10pm which caters to Dhohr, Asr, and Maghrib Salah.
Imam of the BCMA Victoria Mosque, Sheikh Ismail Nur commented “the public adhan would continue in Ramadan and possibly throughout this year. Thanks to everyone that helped to make it happen. The BC Muslim Association”.
Shortly after, the Vancouver City gave permission to Vancouver Al-Jamia Masjid to give adhan for the remainder of the Ramadan month for Maghrib Salah and then the Burnaby City Council unanimously agreed to grant BCMA’s Burnaby branch, Masjid Al-Salam to do the same.
During this time, the Surrey Jamia Masjid also were in the talks with the mayor, Mr. Doug MaCallum after the BCMA Surrey Delta Masjid Chairperson, Br. Asad Gondal had put in a written request for this in early May. Alhamdulillah, with some discussions back and forth, permission was eventually granted for adhan to be proclaimed in the last 5 days of Ramadan.
BCMA President, Br. Iltaf Sahib was grateful to the Mayors and City Councillors for their support in this endeavour and stated, “ The call to prayer publicly lifts the spirits of Muslims of the City of Victoria, Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey. This was truly a beautiful gesture from the various city councils and a history in the making. May Allah bless all those who made this happen.”
The Muslims of BC are grateful for the Municipalities of Victoria, Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey for showing appreciation and acknowledging the Muslim community in this difficult time of the pandemic. Since we have been unable to attend the congregational prayers in our masajids during the month of Ramadan, this kind gesture has helped lift the spirit and morale’s of many in our community.
Premier John Horgan also shared the News on his Facebook profile saying, “Maintaining our sense of community is so important in challenging times like this. This Vancouver mosque broadcasting its evening prayer is just one way of doing that for our friends and neighbours in the Muslim community. We’re all in this together..”
The Muslims of BC are grateful for the Municipalities of Victoria, Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey for showing appreciation and acknowledging the Muslim community in this difficult time of the pandemic.
