NCCM CALLS FOR RESPONSE FROM PEEL REGIONAL POLICE AS OFFICER INVOLVED IN THE SHOOTING OF EJAZ CHOUDRY DECLINES TO BE INTERVIEWED BY SIU

62 year-old Ejaz Ahmed Choudry was shot and killed by police in a disturbing display of excessive force

(Mississauga – July 23, 2020)

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is calling for action today from Chief Nishan Duraiappah after the update issued today by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in regards to the death of Ejaz Choudry.

The update from the SIU made it clear the subject officer involved declined to be interviewed and did not submit a copy of his notes to the investigators.

“We have been clear from day one with the Peel Regional Police. We have demanded answers. We have demanded accountability. We have demanded that the Peel Regional Police immediately state that there is zero tolerance for officers who engage in excessive force,” said Mustafa Farooq, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims. “Simply put, the silence of the Peel Regional Police, in refusing to take clear action and in continuing to pass the proverbial buck to the SIU, speaks volumes. The fact that the officer declined to work with the SIU, in our estimation, speaks for itself. We are calling, once again, on Chief Duraiappah to finally do the right thing and take action.”

Nader Hasan, counsel for the family and partner at Stockwoods LLP, stated, “It’s troubling but not surprising that the officer has declined to speak to the SIU. There is nothing he could possibly say that could excuse or justify shooting Ejaz.”

NCCM calls on Chief Duraiappah to clearly explain, in light of this troubling development, how the Peel Regional Police will conduct itself to ensure that the family of Uncle Ejaz receives a modicum of justice.

The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization that is a leading voice for Muslim civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
