NCCM CALLS FOR CHARGES AFTER ALLEGED ASSAULT OF A MUSLIM WOMAN IN QUEBEC

8-26-2020

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is publicly calling for action today from the Chief Officer of the MRC Des Collines police. NCCM is calling for the police to adequately and appropriately lay charges to address an apparently hate-motivated assault that occurred in Quebec this week.

On or around Saturday, August 8th 2020, the complainant, ["MH"], a black Muslim woman who wears hijab, was physically and verbally assaulted at a gas station located in Masham, Quebec by a customer.

“There must be a zero-tolerance for hate in Quebec,” said Mustafa Farooq, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, “Having spoken with the complainant, it is clear that charges should be laid. No one should be victimized because of what they wear, what they look like, or what they believe in”.

NCCM is aware that police are anticipating laying charges. We call for charges to be filed promptly to demonstrate clearly that hate-motivated assaults cannot be accepted in Quebec or anywhere in Canada.

NCCM will be speaking on behalf of MH in relation to what occurred.
