Petition for Gaza organized by Alameen Post tabled in the BC legislature by Bruce Ralston MLA

10-09-2014

VICTORIA – More than a thousand Surrey residents have signed a petition asking Premier Clark to bring children seriously injured in the Gaza conflict to BC hospitals for treatment.

Premier Wynne of Ontario has already decided to do so in her province.

The request to Canadians to help both Palestinian and Israeli children came from Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish of Toronto.  His book: I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey  was inspired by the loss of three of his daughters to Israeli shelling in 2009.

The Ontario health system will open its doors to children seriously injured in the four-week conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas. The Ontario Health Minister, Eric Hoskins, announcing the decision of the Ontario government  told the Toronto Star “ We believe we have a moral responsibility to respond in this instance.”

Following the announcements of Ontario, Alameen Post kick started the campaign here in BC to petition the BC Government.

The response was overwhelming, said Mohammed Jafar Bhamji, Managing editor of AlameenPost.

About 1500 petition were collected  mostly from lower mainalnd including online  petitions on www.alameenpost.com.

Since majority of the Constituents were   from Surrey, Bruce Ralston was more than willing to accept the petition and table it in the legislature.

“There is widespread support for this request among my constituents in Surrey,”  said Ralston, MLA for Surrey-Whalley and the New Democrat spokesperson for multiculturalism.

“I’m calling on Premier Clark to follow Ontario’s example.”
