Iqra School Students Ready to Welcome Syrian Children with Personalized Gift Boxes

12-16-2015

Thousands of refugees from Syria are coming to Canada and have been tormented by the experiences of war. Canada has decided to bring 10,000 refugees by the end of 2016. British Columbia alone will take in 1,134 people, including about 900 children. It is our job as Canadians to make sure they feel comfortable, safe, welcomed, and free in their new home.

This month, Iqra Islamic School has collaborated with the Muslim Food Bank to collect non-perishable food items and to make welcome boxes for children coming to the city of Surrey. The welcome boxes, made by the students of Iqra, are gifts to the children coming from Syria to give them a sense of joy and acceptance. The boxes consist of items such as books, toys, hats, scarves, mittens, socks, stuffed toys, candy, accessories, toiletries, and so much more. In total, the school has made 348 gift boxes.

Not only has this been a chance for the students of Iqra School to get more involved in their community, but it is also a chance for them to become more aware of what is going on around them. This week, students studied the living conditions of the refugee camps and the effect war has had on the Syrian citizens. Iqra School is overjoyed to say that this has been a huge success and every student was able to contribute in his or her own way.

Every child deserves a happy lifestyle, most importantly, a sense of safety and belonging. Most of these children haven’t been to school or felt safe in over 3 years; no one should have to go through that. Iqra is hoping these gift boxes will help them feel welcome and accepted as they start their new life in Canada.
