City Of Surrey Welcomes Refugees

7-26-2016

An article published on June 10, in Vancouver Sun stated that, “Just under half (44 per cent) of the nearly 1,700 government-assisted Syrian refugees who have arrived in the province since November have settled in Surrey. That is up from 22 and 23 per cent of all the incoming refugees to B.C. who settled in Surrey in 2014 and 2015, according to Chris Friesen, settlement services director for the Immigrant Services Society.”

That by any standard is high, good for Surrey for attracting the new comers to Canada, and as always the City of Surrey not only embraced the Syrian refugees, it also rolled out an official welcome mat for the refugees.

On July 20th, City of Surrey officially welcomed the Syrian Refugees to Surrey. An event was held at the Surrey City Hall Plaza. The three hour event was open to everyone who wanted to attend.

The event facilitated for the refugees to meet and greet with the local residents. However, more importantly, it provided them with an opportunity to connect and network with future employers, employment agencies, immigrant services organizations, RCMP, Work BC officials, and many other services available throughout the city which they may not have been aware of.

It was an event that was designed to attract people of all ages where on one hand it had educational and informational booths set out for the adults, it also had tons of children’s activities from bouncy castle, to face painting and much more.

One thing was evident City of Surrey demonstrated to the Syrian Refugees that the city is very much interested in them choosing to call Surrey their home, and City of Surrey is committed to ensure that they establish their furture homes right here in Surrey.

It was an amazing effort shown by the City’s Political leadership and City Staff to organize such an event and on behalf of AlAmeen Post we would like to express our gratitude and congratulate them on a job well done.
