ASPIRE Dental Services Program Muslim Food Bank & Community Services

10-04-2016

In refugee populations resettled to the Canada oral health needs deserve special consideration for many reasons. Refugees need special care because they arrive with oral abnormalities, the most common health problem in refugee children, and the second most common problem among refugee adults.

Poor oral health amongst refugees may be a result of a limited diet and lack of access to dental health care in refugee camps, and in some cases may also be a result of torture and lack of education, a lot of times dental care is not a priority to most families under circumstances that they come from.

As refugees adopt a western diet, they may become more susceptible to poor oral health, particularly if they do not have adequate access to Canadian dental care or have not adopted Canadian oral hygiene guidelines or simply just can’t afford treatment when they arrive.

The Muslim Food Bank and Community Services started the ASPIRE Dental Services Program last year to respond to these needs with our sponsors and generous Dentists. Through this program we provide free Dental Camps at our facilities in Surrey and follow up treatments at the offices of the volunteering Dentists. Our aim is to provide dental care to all our clients that need good oral health including keeping teeth free from cavities and preventing gum disease. Poor oral health can affect your appearance and self-esteem, and has been linked to sleeping problems, as well as behavioral and developmental problems in children. Poor oral health can also affect your ability to chew and digest food properly. Good nutrition is important to helping build strong teeth and gums that can resist disease and promote healing. As part of our ASPIRE Community Services program, we help our clients deal with challenges so that they can become progressive and productive citizens of this country.

On Saturday October 1 2016 , Our generous dentist did it again, our Dental Screening was done at the  Surrey facilities and the follow up treatments are ongoing.  Special thanks and recognition to our dentists, Dr. Dewji of ABC Dental, Dr. Asif Tejani, Dr. Farah Zakeri, Astra Dental Centre, Dr. Athar Butt, Langley Village Dental.  If you need any help finding the right dentist, please contact these Dental Clinics.

Some Facts: One of the first things you see when you look in the mirror and smile is your teeth. Many patients come to us with crooked, stained, chipped, crowned or even missing teeth and seek help. They simply don’t like what they see. And, although it is a cosmetic issue for most, the underlying effects go much deeper. Often low self-esteem results from a poor self-image, which can ultimately even cause depression and a decline in your overall health.

Once Again Special Thanks to All Sponsors & Dentists. If you want more information about the program or would like to donate, please visit us at www.muslimfoodbank.com, call us at 1-866-824-2525 or email at contact@muslimfoodbank.com.
