Gen. Raheel Sharif will be missed

11-24-2016

On November 29, Gen Raheel Sharif retired as Pakistan’s Army chief.

He is the first army Chief to retire without a coup at the height of his popularity.

He came to office in the winter of 2013 after a historic transfer of power between two civilian administrations.

Sharif gained popularity after taking a bold step of launching a ground offensive to clear the tribal areas from militants that use Pakistan as a launching pad for terrorist activists.

In the three years of office, the results of his efforts were quite impressive. Under his watch he also launched the paramilitary Sindh Rangers to tackle the task of clearing Karachi of armed militants, organised criminal groups.

He comes from a distinguished pedigree of an army family. Raheel’s father was an army major, his late brother, Major Shabbir Sharif, was awarded Pakistan's highest gallantry award.

His statement on India’s surgical strike was quite blunt, “India will be teaching its children about Pakistan’s surgical strike if the latter took such measures. Pakistani troops are capable of teaching Indian forces a lesson.”

He Said, “If Pakistan were to launch surgical strikes, India would not be able to forget it for generations to come”.

Pakistan's prime minister on Saturday November 26th, selected Lieutenant General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the new Army Chief of Pakistan's Army.
