KPU Film Festival for Muslim Women

5-30-2017

Bringing together an eclectic mix of Muslim women of a variety of ages and ethnic backgrounds, the Voices of Muslim Women course offered by Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Visual Media Workshop, Kwantlen Student Association and Freed Education Co., is a unique opportunity to showcase the powerful voices that these women in our community posses.

The aim of the course is first and foremost, to educate the participating women about their ability to voice their individual opinions and experiences as members of our society with particular emphasis on social justice theory. Given this platform, the course seeks to inspire women to be fearless in the pursuit of expressing themselves and to ultimately demonstrate to the community that their voices matter and deserve to be heard.

There are a total of twenty women who will participate in the month long course which consists of four classes, commenced on April 8th and subsequently spanning each Saturday of the month. As participants of the course, each woman will be making what is referred to as a “digital story”. The act of digital story telling is the process of telling a desired story by narrating, recording and editing it into the form of a video. The final product is reflective of each individual as they are at liberty to add photos, video clips and music as they see fit. The videos will be approximately two to three minutes in length and encompass the stories and ideas which each woman developed throughout the four classes of the course.

The finale of the course will be in the form of a film festival taking place on May 17th at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. On this night, the women will be given the opportunity to present their final projects to their peers and attending members of the community. The evening as a whole will be a celebration of the strength and courage of these women who have chosen to share their stories. The evening will consist of the screening of their films and will also include refreshments throughout the night and will also give attendees the opportunity to interact with not only the participants of the course, but with fellow members of the community.

The Voices of Muslim Women program is distinctly unique as it allows the participating women to have the ability to write their own story and to share it in a manner which reflects their individual agency and identity. In doing so, the program seeks to empower these women as well as other Muslim women in the community to realize that they do in fact have a voice and that their voices need to be heard.

Freed Education Co., Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Visual Media Workshop invites all members of the public to be a part of this amazing program by attending the film festival on May 17th. Tickets can be purchased at Bombay Collection, Bombay Couture and KPU Surrey Bookstore for $10 or $20 at the door. Event details as well as sponsorship opportunities will be available at freededucationco.com.
