Dr. Muhammad Morshed is a public health clinical scientist at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he is Head of the Zoonotic and Emerging Pathogens section. He is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Morshed immigrated to Canada in 1996 along with his wife and daughter choosing Vancouver as their home and community.

In both his public health and his academic roles, Morshed has excelled, receiving recognition from peers and colleagues across Canada, the United States as well as internationally. Besides providing advice to clinicians in his areas of expertise (emerging infections such as syphilis, Lyme disease and other zoonotic - diseases of animals that can infect humans), he has also added significantly to the general knowledge and understanding of these diseases with more than 90 refereed scientific publications.

Born in Bangladesh, Morshed received his PhD from the Yamguchi University School of Medicine, Japan, in 1994. He completed his specialty training at the Research Institute of Tuberculosis in Tokyo, Japan and from the College of Natural Resources, University of California, Berkeley. The diagnostic laboratory he leads is responsible for carrying out specialized serology testing, molecular testing and microbial fingerprinting, as well as program evaluation and research. His research focuses on improving our epidemiological understanding and finding better ways of diagnosing and monitoring zoonotic and emerging pathogens. In particular, Dr. Moshed is recognized by the national and international research community for his expertise on Lyme disease and syphilis. To study in this area, he uses both molecular tools in the laboratory and leads field work to study pathogens in their cycles in mice, ticks and mosquitoes (vectors of zoonotic diseases).

He is a member of many provincial, national, and international working groups as well as scientific and diagnostic networks. Dr. Morshed holds memberships in the American Society for Microbiology, the Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association and is a registered member of the Canadian College of Microbiologists (CCM). He also has served on the CCM Executive since 2012.
