Canadian Islamic History Month celebrations at Masjid Al Salam

In October, Canadians celebrate Canadian Islamic History Month. On Saturday October 14, 2017 The B.C. Muslim Association marked its 10th anniversary of celebrating this very important event at Masjid As Salaam and Education Center. . Well over 300 people, including acting Mayor of Burnaby, Sarb Dhaliwar and ambassadors of Pakistan and Turkey attended to celebrate and to hear the key note speaker Dr. Amal Ghazal, Simon Fraser University director for Comparative Study  of Muslim Societies and Cultures. Her hour long presentations concluded with a questions and answer session on the topic;

" from Muslim Empire to Nation-States: The creation of borders and the making of identities in the twentieth century"

 

Minister Jolly on her  Oct. 1st, 2017 statement said  " Today, we celebrate the 10 th anniversary of Canadian Islamic History Month.

Enacted by the Parliament of Canada in 2007, this month offers Canadians an unprecedented opportunity to honour our large Muslim-Canadian community and recognize their valuable contributions in shaping and building our country.

This year, as we mark Canada 150, we have the opportunity to celebrate our country's diversity and spirit of openness. We are committed to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming society that promotes respect for everyone, regardless of faith or ethnic origin.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to participate in the events and activities that celebrate Islamic History Month".
