Prime Minister Justin Trudeau campaigns with Liberal candidate Gordie Hogg over the weekend

12-04-2017

On Dec. 11, by-elections will take place across Canada in four federal ridings. The announcements were made in early November for Newfoundland and Labrador riding of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, the British Columbia riding of South Surrey-White Rock, Saskatchewan's Battlefords-Lloydminster and Ontario's Scarborough-Agincourt on Sunday.

On Saturday December 2nd,  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau campaigned with a Liberal candidate Gordie Hogg  at a packed hall  in Surrey at Semiahmoo Secondary School .

Gordie Hogg, a former member of the B.C. legislature and White Rock mayor is running for the seat left vacant by Dianne Watts who is now running for the BC Liberal Leadership Bid.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the crowd of supporters that "We made history in the last election by electing 17 British Columbia Liberal MPs for the federal Parliament,", "It was wonderful, but records are made to be broken and I think next Monday, we can break that record and make it 18."

Turdeau reminded the crowd that Canadians have always been progressive, forward thinking, open minded and ambitious people for our selves and our communites. Taking a jibe at the conservative leader Leader Andrew Scheer he said "It is easy in politics to look at division, it is easy to attack, to be cynical but we in canada are bucking that trend" , "We will help people now and in the future", "we will protect the environment by investing in it and building capacity." He also promised to reduce small business tax to 9% over the next few months.

The seat is important to both the Liberals and Conservatives. In the 2015 elections Conservative Dianne Watts won the seat with just over 1400 votes.  It can be expected that Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer will campaign for a second time with candidate Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the former National Revenue Minister, next week.

Hogg said in his speech that he attended Semiahmoo Secondary School, where the event was held, and played on the basketball team.

"I'm hoping to join another team in Ottawa ... a team that is going to make a difference for this community and for this country, a team that is already showing great insight, great change and great compassion."

The NDP came in a distant third in the last election in the riding.

The NDP’s candidate is Jonathan Silveira.  Jonathan is a real estate agent and founder of Surrey Kids Matter.  Jonathan also ran as a provincial candidate for the BC NDP in the last May election.
