International Day Against Racism and Bigotry March on Saturday March 24th

3-21-2018

The annual International Day Against Racism and Bigotry March, will be held in Vancouver on Saturday March 24th at 1 pm, starting at Thornton Park (Main Street Skytrain Station) on the occupied, traditional, ancestral, and unseeded territories of the Coast Salish peoples.

The march will go through the Dowtown Eastside and Chinatown and back to Thorton Park. This is where Indigenous, Black, Chinese, Japanese and South Asian people lived historically. This is because they were not welcome in other parts of Vancouver at the time.

Well-known academic and activist Sunera Thobani PhD, will speak at march on Islamophobia and White Supremacy which has been on the rise recently and has resulted in the rise of Trump.

The march and  rally in Vancouver is coming together in a united effort in Vancouver to fight all forms of racism, bigotry and oppression with the recent growth of white supremacist and ultrarational groups in Metro Vancouver.  The White Supremacist hate propaganda has not only been racist, but also sexist, hetrosexist, transexist, ableist and classist.

Speakers will address the failure of the Canadian justice system in the murder of Colten Boushie, Tina Fontaine, Tony Du,  and the mass shooting at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City killing 6 and wounding 19, as well as alarming increase in hate crimes by White Supremacist and the failure of the justice system to protect us.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racism is observed annually to remember the 69-people killed by police at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly of the United Nations called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
