Grade 5 Sale Day at Iqra

5-30-2018

Achievement of British Columbia) Program Managers, Wafa Bilal and Envision Financial’s Assistant VP, for Commercial Banking Kenneth D’Sena. This is the 3rd year the Iqra students have participated in this program. This program takes on an inquiry-based approach to learning and gives students the freedom to express their creative side by establishing their own businesses.

Over the course of the program, students learned all about being entrepreneurs and creating their own startup business including coming up with a company name and logo, calculating product expenses and sales, merchandising, promoting their products, researching their target market, bookkeeping, learning about good customer service and more. With this program the grade 5 students practiced problem solving and creative thinking. Students spent several weeks working on creating unique and creative products with the theme of Ramadan to sell and determining appropriate prices, and promoting their products by advertising to students, parents, and other members of the school community.

On May 10th, the grade 5 students successfully sold handmade products in the courtyard, creating a market bazaar style atmosphere. They sold products such as: iftar packets, henna, Ramadan cookies, Eid pinãtas, gourmet dates, and cupcakes. Both divisions raised about $1000 total in profit and have decided to donate a portion of this amount to different charities including the ICNA Educational Relief fund, NISA homes and an orphanage.

Alhumdulillah the program was a great success again this year! Special thanks to JABC, students, teachers, staff, and parents. Students learned what it takes to run a business and also prepare for real world situations.
