Open Letter to The Prime Minister of Canada, The Honourable Justin P. J. Trudeau

6-12-2018

Razan Al-Najjar, a 21-year-old Palestinian medic was shot and killed by an Israeli sniper (IDF - Israeli Defence Force) near the border fence on Friday June 1st, 2018. She was shot in the chest despite wearing a field nurses’ white uniform as well as waving her arms as to signal that she was attending to a wounded victim.

During the Palestinian Great March of Return, Israeli soldiers have killed more than 115 and wounded more than 13,000 Palestinian civilians. The victims have included medical personnel, journalist and people with disabilities.

In her interview with the New York times which took place a month prior to her murder, Razan Al-Najjar said, “We have one goal — to save lives and evacuate people,”. She also said that Gaza needed more female medics like herself. “The strength that I showed as a first responder on the first day of protests, I dare you to find it anyone else,”.

Chairperson of the National think tank, Think for Actions, Dr. Mukarram Zaidi said, “Israel and the IDF have violated international law by using excessive force and killing: civilians, medical personnel, journalists and people with disabilities. The killing of 21-year-old Razan Al-Najjar who was wearing a field nurses’ white uniform, is a clear violation of the Geneva convention. We request Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to, condemn the actions of the Israeli Defence Force, and request the International Criminal Court (ICC) to launch an investigation into the war crimes and atrocities committed by the IDF.

To honour Razan Al-Najjar’s memory and legacy, Think for Actions is starting a new award: Top 20 under 25. The details will be announced by July 2018 and the awards will be given out in August 2018. These awards are for individuals who have shown great acts of selflessness and helped their communities. They are also for those individuals who have overcome great obstacles and struggles, both personal and professional, and achieved great feats and milestones despite their hardships.
