NCCM Condemns Horrific Shooting in Toronto

(Ottawa – July 23, 2018) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a civil liberties and advocacy organization, categorically condemns the repulsive attack last night in Toronto. According to police and media reports, a gunman opened fire on a bustling street in the Danforth area, shooting fifteen people. Two victims have died. Toronto Police are continuing to investigate, but have identified the shooter as Faisal Hussain.
“We are shocked and angered by this shooting attack in Toronto. This was a horrific act of violence. Like all Canadians, we grieve the loss of our fellow community members and our thoughts and prayers are with the survivors, the families and friends of the victims, and all Torontonians during this absolutely heartbreaking time,” says NCCM Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee.
The NCCM commends the Toronto Police Service for their swift action at the scene, and praises the courage of first responders - civilians and paramedics alike - who offered critical help to those who sustained injuries.
“The NCCM denounces this attack in the strongest possible terms. There can be no justification for such acts of brutal violence. We urge everyone to wait for the police investigation to provide answers about this devastating situation before speculating about motive. Toronto is an incredible city and we know it will meet this tragedy with the same resilience and resolve that has made it what it is today,” says NCCM Communications Coordinator Leila Nasr.
