10-31-2018

Iraq's Baghdad University has made it into a list of top universitys in the world for 2019, offering a glimmer of hope for post-war development in the conflict-torn country.

The university, which was founded in 1957, made it into the 801 position in the 1,000 band of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The table ranked 1,250 universities around the world, with the UK's Oxford and Cambridge Universities taking the top two spots.

"Baghdad University achieved a new accomplishment by entering the Times Ranking, after its researchers submitted more than 7,000 researches to Scopus international database," a statement by Iraq's ministry of higher education said on Thursday.

"The result of the British Times Rankings shows the University of Baghdad was among the world universities that have been contested and evaluated in accordance with 2019 Times Rankings criteria, which is considered as the second best global ranking after Academic Shanghai Ranking," it added.

Phil Baty, editorial director of the rankings, was quoted by the BBC as saying that Baghdad university had been "very strong in international co-operation" and that its success showed the importance placed on universities in the Iraq's post-war reconstruction.

Since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, the country's infrastructure has undergone several periods of severe disruption, including by the rise and defeat of the Islamic State group.
