Seven Muslim Candidates in the upcoming Election from BC

On August 15th, 2021 the writs of the 44th Canadian Parliament election were issued by Governor General Mary Simon and thereby sending Canadians to the polls on September 20th, 2021.

In the last 23 months since the last election Canadians have faced the crisis of a century and Canadians are just coming out of the Covid Pandemic. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau while calling the election says, “Now, as more people roll up their sleeves to get vaccinated, Canadians have a choice to make about our future. We either move forward with our real plan to finish the fight against COVID-19 and build a better Canada for everyone.”

Here in British Columbia there are seven Muslim Candidates who are vying for your votes. Majority of them are for the Liberal Party of Canada. Two of the Candidates are from the Green Party and one of the candidates is from the Conservative Party of Canada.

Meet Ahmed Yousef:  Your Liberal Party Candidate for Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge

Meet Amir Alavi - Your Liberal Party Candidate for Prince George–Peace River–Northern Rockies

Amir Alavi is your Liberal Candidate for Prince George-Peace River-Rocky Mountains. He immigrated to Canada with his family from Iran at the age of 16. After high school, Amir attended Simon Fraser University studying Psychology.

Soon after enrolling, he had to learn the values of hard work and resiliency as a family crisis forced him to withdraw from University and battle unemployment. He eventually found a path back to university and graduated from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, and currently works for a financial institution.

A long-time community volunteer, Amir has served at the Ghadir Community Centre for more than 10 years, and is a member of the CFA Society of Vancouver.

Amir is passionate about promoting diversity and economic inclusion. Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies needs a representative who understands our priorities, who will take bold action to strengthen the middle class, protect the environment, and build a fairer and more equal Canada. Meet Dr. Farrukh Chishtie   - Your Green Party Candidate for VANCOUVER KINGSWAY

Dr. Farrukh Chishtie (he/him) is an atmospheric, climate and earth observation scientist with extensive experience in various experimental and modelling disciplines. Holding three Masters degrees and two PhDs in Applied Mathematics and Education with specialization in environment and sustainability, he has more than twenty years of research experience. Along with grassroots advocacy on issues of climate change and environmental degradation across the globe, he aims for holistic understanding and meaningful action.

His areas of expertise and active research are climate science and policy, climate adaptation and mitigation. He was a member of the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) validation project by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in collaboration with NASA. He is a climate expert with the University of British Columbia (UBC) Sustainability Hub where he raises awareness on climate change across departments. He is also pursuing a doctoral degree in rehabilitation sciences at UBC with thesis dissertation focused on developing inclusive care programs for COVID-19 and future epidemics and pandemics.

He is the president and founder of the non-profit Peaceful Society, Science and Innovation Foundation based in Vancouver, which promotes science and technology for peaceful and humane ends (https://www.peacefulsocietyscience.org). He holds visiting scientist and faculty positions at Environment and Climate Change Canada, the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN), the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario, and is the Green Party of Canada's Deputy Critic on Climate Change.

Meet Imtiaz Popat  - Your Green Party Candidate for Vancouver-Granville
 
 

Imtiaz Popat is a Therapeutic Counsellor who is currently working in public health with the South Asian Health Institute (SAHI) which is a part of Fraser Health. He believes that our mental wellness and the wellness of the planet are interconnected.

Imtiaz has been a proponent for global justice and is a firm believer in the Global Greens Charter. He is a cofounder of The Coalition Against Bigotry – Pacific and the Community Based Anti Hate Task Force. He has been an advocate for ecological and social justice. He believes that ecological justice is social justice.

Imtiaz has organized protests against racism and bigotry, advocated for LGBT rights and animal welfare and protested against LNG and the Site C Dam as he argues that the building of the Site C Dam and pipelines are a form of racist colonization of Indigenous homelands. He has also been advocating for the homeless, police reform, street safety and better public transit including fuel cell trams and streetcars. He has been a longtime proponent for proportional representation and has worked on many electoral reform campaigns at the local, provincial and federal level.

Imtiaz issued the following statement on the threat received by the Langley Islamic Centre, "We have had a violent threat against the Langley Islaimic Centre, but where are the political leaders on this issue," asks Imtiaz Popat, Green Party Candidate for Vancouver Granville. 

"We had a Muslim family killed and Muslim contiue to be attacked across Canada, but hate crimes are not an election issue," says Popat. 

"We have over 300 hate groups in Canada and only the Proud Boy, from Eastern Canada have been put in the terrorist list," says Popat. "We have many other groups including the KKK and the Soldiers of Odin that are opperationing in the Fraser Valley,"says Popat. "But they are not on the Terrorist list". "The Anti-Terror Act was designed to target Muslim,"says Popat. "It is inherently an Islamophobic law." 

"The National Council of Muslim Canadians have asked for stronger anti-hate laws," says Popat. "But where is the political response,"says Popat "Why isn't any political leader talking about this" says Popat

Meet Taleeb Noormohamed - Your Liberal Party Candidate for Vancouver Granville


 

A champion for a better future in Vancouver Granville

Taleeb Noormohamed’s diverse experiences in community service and business will make him an effective Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville. Taleeb is driven by a desire to build a strong, equitable society.

Taleeb served as a senior official in the federal government from 2002 to 2007, which included establishing the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security.

He then served as Director of the Air India Review Secretariat and Special Advisor to the Hon. Bob Rae. In 2018, Taleeb was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

In 2007, Taleeb joined the Organizing Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games serving as the Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships.

After the Olympics, Taleeb returned to work in the tech sector, where he initially began his career, and went on to serve as a Vice President at HomeAway (now Expedia), and then as Chief Growth Officer at Farfetch. Currently, Taleeb is the Chief Executive Officer at an online marketplace for apparel and home goods.

Taleeb has a proven record of service to our community, and began volunteering at Vancouver’s Covenant House in 2001 where he established a mentorship program for at-risk youth. In 2003, he joined the Board of Directors on which he served until 2012.

In 2004 Taleeb joined the board of what is now the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where he was an integral part of establishing the “Racing Towards a Cure” initiative. From 2013 to 2019, Taleeb served on the Board of Directors of the Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation.

Taleeb’s commitment to volunteerism and community development was recognized in 2007, when he was awarded the “Governor General’s Caring Canadian” Award, and again in 2013, when he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University, a Master’s degree in International Education Policy from Harvard University and attended Oxford University for his doctoral studies.

Taleeb’s passion and experience make him the ideal Member of Parliament to champion the needs of Vancouver Granville in Ottawa.
