Muslim Food Bank and Community Service’s Fundraising dinner

11-13-2021

Over 325 people responded to our invitation to join us at the Riverside Grand Ballroom in Richmond last Saturday for the Muslim Food Bank and Community Service’s Fundraising dinner; an event organized to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work of the COVID-19 frontline workers and support the resettlement of Afghan Refugees in Canada. Elders, youths, families, imams, leaders and children eagerly listened to Guest Speaker Dr. Munir El-Kassem give an inspiring lecture, and were entertained by comedian Hassan Phills and singer Ayub Salahuddin. Guests joined us for an entertaining, fun, and unforgettable evening while showing appreciation to our frontline workers and commending the spirit and bravery of the Afghan newcomers.

From humble beginnings operating out of a family garage in 2010, the Muslim Foodbank has since greatly expanded their operations to offer an array of integrated programs, wide-reaching partnerships and a dedicated food-bank, hosting hundreds of active volunteers. The Muslim Foodbank receives an average of 600 families a month, in urgent need of basic food security and grant a helping hand. The overwhelming majority of their clients are seniors, women and youth. The Muslim Foodbank seeks to give these individuals the resources they need and help them get back on their feet and live a life of dignity. Although as a community we inch toward a safer, more secure community every day, the work is far from over.

With Canada’s gracious admittance of over 40,000 Afghan refugees, they were able to avoid distressing circumstances and start a new life in Canada. The COVID-19 Pandemic has had effects on everyone in our community, but the strength, resilience, and bravery of the Frontline workers is most commendable and deserves to be recognized. Therefore, the mission of this fundraising dinner was simple, to show appreciation for our Frontline workers and the courage of the recently arrived Afghan newcomers.

The euphoria, excitement and jovial atmosphere at the Dinner was impossible to miss. With exciting plans in the works, including expansion into Alberta, the Muslim Foodbank is primed to create incredible impact in the upcoming year!
