NCCM WELCOMES FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES DECISION TO ADOPT RESOLUTION TO TACKLE ISLAMOPHOBIA
10-08-2022
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) welcomes the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) decision to adopt NCCM recommendations to address Islamophobia across our country. The FCM brings together more than 2,000 cities and communities from coast to coast to coast, representing 90 percent of Canadians across all provinces and territories.
Titled “Measures to Tackle Islamophobia,” the resolution effectively encourages member municipalities to treat NCCM’s recommendations as the gold standard when it comes to addressing anti-Muslim hate.
NCCM made these recommendations after consultations with hundreds of Canadian Muslim groups from across Canada in the aftermath of the horrific June 6, 2021 Islamophobic attack that took the lives of four members of a Muslim family in London, Ontario. These seven municipal recommendations were part of a broader set of 61 recommendations addressing all levels of government at the National Action Summit on Islamophobia held in 2021.
“The Islamophobic violence and loss Canadian Muslims have experienced is impossible to measure. But what we can do is have the courage to take bold action towards building a safer Canada for all. The FCM’s resolution is a welcome step in this direction,” said Stephen Brown, CEO of NCCM.
“This is just the beginning. We look forward to working step by step with all municipalities that want to take fighting systemic Islamophobia seriously. We look forward to achieving real implementation of these policies.”
The FCM has listened to the broad chorus of voices across Canadian communities that have asked for authorities to do more on Islamophobia and hate. This is a major step forward in Canada’s journey towards addressing systemic Islamophobia on all levels.
These recommendations range widely from passing anti-hate street harassment bylaws, to community funding for local anti-hate initiatives, to conducting public education campaigns.
We specifically also would like to thank the City of Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown, and Councillor Santos for sponsoring this important resolution at the FCM.
