Meet and greet with David Eby

A meet and greet event with Honorable leader of BCNDP and the next Premier of BC was organized by Dr. Syed Ashiq Ali Shah, Mr. Gul Shah and Mr. Changiz Khan Durrani at Dhaliwal Banquet Hall on Saturday, October 22, 2022 with a group of Muslim professionals and entrepreneurs of BC. The event was organized to show support for the BCNDP leader and Premier designate, David Eby.

At the opening of the event Gul Shah requested participants to observe a moment of silence, to honour Constable Shaelyn Yang who was killed in the line of duty. He thanked the distinguished chief guest, MLAs and the members of Muslim community for their participation. He invited the Muslim community to engage with the local leaders to build a better society.

Mr. Changiz Khan congratulated David Eby and emphasized that the Muslim community of BC should network and connect with our elected members of the Legislature, to have conversations on the issues we are facing here in BC – issues such as public safety, housing, discrimination, Islamophobia and climate change.

Dr. Syed Ashiq Ali Shah congratulated David Eby and expressed optimism in working with the visionary leadership of David Eby, for the betterment of the Muslim community. He appreciated the efforts of the BCNDP government in addressing the issue of Islamophobia through the hard work of MLA Rachna Singh. He invited the attention of the Premier designate to the underrepresentation of Muslims in all levels of government, crisis in the health care sector, drug and gang wars, and housing affordability. Finally, he thanked all the MLAs for their support of Muslim community, especially, Garry Begg, his CA Amna Shah and Jassa Grewal of the Khalsa Diwan Society of Surrey for their help with the event.

MLA and Government Whip of the Legislative Assembly Garry Begg highlighted the teachings of Islam as a religion of peace, kindness, service to mankind, constancy, and mutual respect. He acknowledged the contributions of Muslim professionals and entrepreneurs in serving the community in general. He highlighted Eby’s ethical values, and why these values are crucial to informing good policy. “Leaders are not born that way, leaders are made over time”, said MLA Begg, as he referred to the exemplary track record of David Eby tackling complex files such as ICBC and Housing throughout his tenure as Minister.

Premier designate David Eby addressed the attendees with his vision for a government which acts decisively and quickly in addressing pertinent issues affecting everyday British Columbians. His approach will also informed through an anti-racism lens, one which ensures that programs are inclusive to all communities. He then participated in a moderated Q&A session with attendees.

The meeting was attended by MLAs Garry Begg, Rachna Singh, Harry Bains, Jagrup Brar and Jinny Sims.

After the program David Eby visited with local Business Barneys Pizza & Fried Chicken. The new owner’s Iqbal Jabbar and Arshad Sohal were grateful of David Eby’s visit and thanked the Premier Designate for his contribution of public services.
