11-22-2022

On Saturday, Oct 29, 2022, Al-Ihsan Educational Foundation held a book launch event with Mufti Aasim Rashid for the recently published book, “Obeying the Messenger.” The event took place at the Al-Ihsan Centre in Surrey and consisted of book reflections, readings, and signings. This book was written by the late erudite scholar and spiritual mentor, Shaykh al-Hadith Maulana Yusuf Motala (rah). Maulana Yusuf Motala (rah) founded the renowned Darul Ulum at Holcombe, Bury, UK, in 1973. This institute became the first of its kind in the western world and produced hundreds of ?ulama? and ?uffa?. Here he taught all levels of students for decades, eventually devoting himself to teaching hadith till the end of his life. He also established and oversaw numerous additional institutions across the UK and other countries through graduates and alumni of Darul Uloom. He was a mentor and elder to scholars and a spiritual guide for thousands of people in Europe and abroad.

This book, originally written in Urdu over 50 years ago, “Itaa’a al-Rasool,” was the first book Shaykh Yusuf authored. Two key factors contributed to Shaykh Yusuf starting this book. The first was a dream in which he was directed to do some work related to the necessity and obligation of obeying the Messenger ?. The second was the emphatic instruction of his shaykh, Maulana Zakariyya Kandhalvi (rah),  “It is my sincere instruction to you that you must not spare any effort in propagating the lifestyle of the Prophet ? and his Companions.” The fact that Shaykh Zakariyya personally oversaw and specifically prayed for the completion, publication and distribution of this book was sufficient for its widespread acceptance.

Mufti Aasim Rashid began the work of translating and annotating this book commenced in the lifetime of the esteemed author (ra?imahu’Llah). He was updated about its progress, saw printouts of the manuscript, and prayed for its completion. The work was completed after he departed this world. May Allah shower His Mercy upon him. The revered author commenced the original Urdu work at al-Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet’s ? Mosque) in Madina. The translator had the privilege of completing most of the English rendering and annotations in the same blessed Mosque. This English version includes many beneficial annotations, including citing primary sources and brief biographical notes to familiarize the English reader with the background, status, achievements, and legacy source of the many great Muslim personalities quoted in this book. In addition, simple explanations have been provided for many Arabic terms, geographical notes are provided for key places, and references and citations have been provided for all hadith, tafsir and other sourced information in this book, as far as the source could be found. Finally, Takhrij of hadiths is presented in a minimalist manner, and the status or details of narrations are given where necessary.

The book is now available for purchase on Amazon across the world, and it can also be purchased at the Al-Ihsan Centre in Surrey, BC.
