Profile: Soufyan Shaheem Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey Goaltender

We want to congratulate Soufyan Shaheem of the PoCo Pirates U15 A1 Minor Ice Hockey team for winning the first-ever Provincial Championship in the history of Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey on March 23, 2023.

Soufyan led the BC Provincial Championship with the best goals-against average for games played.  In Burnaby, he also earned the top Goalie of the Tournament Award in the Classic Pat Quinn Tournament held in December 2022.

With his hardworking and dedicated team, Soufyan made it to the Provincials last year, earning a Bronze Medal, another first for PoCo Minor Hockey.

Soufyan is an aspiring goaltender who has played with the Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey for seven years.  He has been dedicated to his craft as a goaltender, working hard on and off the ice.

Soufyan is the grandson of Mohammad Shaheem, one of the pioneers of the BC Muslim community and the BCMA.  Nicknamed by his team as Souf or Soufy, he loves to play hockey but also maintains excellent grades at school.  He has been home-schooled for Islamic studies learning Quran recitation, memorization, and Quranic English Commentary since early childhood.

He volunteers with the City's Skating program and his sister's Ringette team in his spare time.  He also runs a small lawn-cutting business in the summer to support his many sporting passions.

He cannot wait for his team's Provincial Banner to be the first banner raised to the rafters, in the brand new PoCo Rec center, on September 2023.  And he is looking forward to being part of the PoCo MAYDAY Parade float with his teammates.
