Religious Freedom and the Month of Muharram

7-26-2023

As we approach the beginning of the month of Muharram in the Islamic Calendar, I am reminded of the notion of sacrifice and justice as Muslims celebrate the start of the Islamic New Year.

Sadly, Muslim community members across Canada, including those who worship at the Ghadir Cultural and Educational Centre in North Vancouver, have faced threats, harassment, and bigotry. This is unacceptable.

Freedom of religion or belief, including the ability to worship in peace and security, is a universal human right and an important part of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms [Section 2(a)]. Muslim community members in North Vancouver and across Canada are an integral part of our community and need our support.

Threats or harassment targeted towards Muslim communities will not be tolerated in the Province of British Columbia. We will always stand up for the right to practice one's faith peacefully.

I invite all British Columbians to reflect with gratitude on the contributions of the strong and diverse Muslim communities across our province.

To all those observing this month, I wish you a peaceful Muharram.
