Surrey RCMP Investigate A Brutal Assault on a Muslim Community Businessman in Surrey Central

The Surrey RCMP are currently investigating a serious assault that occurred on Friday, August 2, in the Whalley area. The incident began at a business in the 10200-block of City Parkway and escalated to a vehicle theft.

At approximately 1:10 p.m., police received a report of a serious assault. When frontline officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from severe injuries and immediately transported him to the hospital.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the victim was set on fire, although the police have not confirmed this detail. According to Jessica Vesper, a witness inside the business, the victim ran from the back of the store with his "entire body doused in fire."

Following the assault, the suspect stole a white Mini Cooper with black stripes and rims, bearing British Columbia license plate D80745, and fled the area. The suspect is described as a young male, approximately 25-30 years old, with a moustache, wearing black pants, a black hoodie with black arms, and a green baseball cap with "Cariboo" written on it.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. Officers are actively searching for the suspect, examining the scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing CCTV footage from the neighborhood. The investigation is still in its early stages, and the motive behind the assault remains unclear.

Surrey RCMP has identified the suspect involved in an attempted murder that occurred in Whalley on August 2, 2024.

33-year-old Kalid Yimer is described as 170 cm (5’6) tall, with dark hair, brown eyes and a medium build.

Yimer is believed to be in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia or travelling to Alberta.

"Given the severity of the incident on August 2, 2024, Kalid Yimer is believed to be violent and dangerous, and police are releasing an enhanced photo to locate him and warn the public," says Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer with Surrey RCMP. "If you have information on the whereabouts of Kalid Yimer, or if you see him, do not approach and call 9-1-1".
