Masjid Rahmah Embarks on Ambitious Expansion Project to Meet Growing Community Needs

8-28-2024

Masjid Rahmah, located in the East Newton area of Surrey, British Columbia, has been serving the Muslim community for over 25 years. Since its establishment in the early 1990s, the community has seen significant growth, outpacing the current capacity of the masjid. Despite expanding to two Jummah sessions, worshippers frequently spill into hallways and even kitchens, highlighting the pressing need for more space.

As the Muslim population in Surrey and across the province continues to grow, Masjid Rahmah is planning a large-scale expansion project to better serve the community. The masjid owns a substantial plot of land adjacent to the current building, which will be the site of a new, larger facility. This new development is currently undergoing the rezoning process, which, by the grace of Allah, is progressing smoothly.

The vision for the new masjid includes a significantly larger prayer space for men, a dedicated sisters’ area, an event hall, and jannazah (funeral) facilities. In addition to these, the expansion will include classrooms and a gym to address the current lack of space for youth activities and sports. The goal is to create a multi-purpose facility that meets the spiritual, educational, and recreational needs of the growing Muslim community.

This ambitious project is expected to take several years and require millions of dollars to complete. However, the Masjid Rahmah team is confident that, with the support and generosity of the community, this project will benefit generations to come.

On Friday, September 20th, 2024, the BC Muslim Association (BCMA) Surrey East branch held its first fundraiser for the new masjid project at the GrandTaj Banquet Hall. The event was a resounding success, with over $500,000 raised. Qari Abdul, the head Imam of BCMA, inspired the audience to contribute generously toward this vital project.

The Masjid Rahmah team extends its heartfelt thanks to all the participants and donors for their unwavering support. “May Allah (SWT) accept your efforts and reward you for your contributions,” they said in a statement.

The masjid invites everyone to seize this unique opportunity to be part of building the house of Allah and contributing to an everlasting Sadaqatul Jariyah (ongoing charity). "None of us know what tomorrow will bring," the team said, urging the community to join the effort today.

The project, once completed, will ensure that Masjid Rahmah can continue to serve its community for decades to come, offering a space not just for worship but for education, fellowship, and youth development.
