Breaking Barriers: Lawyer Abudi Awaysheh Provides Free Legal Services at the Ajyal Islamic Centre

11-27-2024

Legal services are often out of reach for many due to high costs, especially for newcomers to Canada who face additional expenses in having their passports, degrees, and other documents notarized. Recognising this challenge and inspired by his values as a Sunni Muslim, Abudi Awaysheh has made it a priority to give back. Through his firm, Abudi Awaysheh Law, he offers pro bono (free) notarization services and summary legal advice every Friday following the first prayer at the Ajyal Islamic Centre in downtown Vancouver, BC. Since January 2024, Abudi Awaysheh Law has served over 150 community members, both Muslim and non-Muslim. In partnership with the BC Muslim Association, Abudi intends to expand this service to other mosques across the Lower Mainland to further extend the reach of his assistance. For those seeking notarization, please bring (1) the original document, (2) a photocopy of your ID for my records, and (3) at least two photocopies of the document to be notarized (one will be retained on file). A voluntary $10 donation per notarized document is welcomed but not required, with all donations directed to the mosque where the service is provided.

Fluent in English and Arabic, Abudi Awaysheh was born in Damascus and moved to Canada at age 17. Practising law since 2012, he specialises in family, employment, and human rights law. An experienced litigator, he has represented clients in every Canadian Territory, and every province from BC to Ontario. Abudi holds a BSc in Genetics and an MSc in Pathology from the University of Western Ontario, a JD from the University of Victoria, and an LLM in Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School.
