Masjid Al Noor Unveils Visionary Expansion Plan in Downtown Surrey
6-24-2025
Surrey, BC — The Masjid Al Noor Committee has officially announced an ambitious and transformative redevelopment plan that will see the mosque expand into a state-of-the-art religious and community facility in the heart of downtown Surrey.
Nestled beside the SkyTrain and surrounded by a rapidly growing skyline of high-rise buildings, the new Masjid Al Noor is strategically positioned to meet the needs of a rising Muslim population in downtown Surrey.
“The new Masjid Al Noor will serve the spiritual, social, and cultural needs of the area’s burgeoning Muslim population,” said Janif Mohammed- President of the Society.
A Landmark for a Growing Community
The proposed redevelopment is designed to serve not just as a place of worship, but as a permanent institution to support current and future generations. Here are the key highlights of the proposed development:
A New Era for Masjid Al Noor
• Expansive New Facility: The new mosque will encompass approximately 21,000 square feet of interior space, with an additional 7,000-square-foot rooftop area.
• Increased Capacity: The upgraded facility will accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers at a time, a significant increase from current limits.
• Dedicated Sisters’ Floor: A separate floor designed specifically for female worshippers, with a capacity of 550, including a private area for mothers with infants and young children.
• Underground Parking: An exclusive, mosque-owned underground parking garage will provide more than 100 parking spaces for congregants.
• Financial Independence: Remarkably, the mosque will receive residential condos valued at approximately CAD 8 million within the adjoining tower—at no cost and with no interest. This ensures self-sustaining operations and long-term financial independence.
Ownership, Autonomy, and Zero Debt
One of the most defining features of this initiative is the full ownership and operational control that Masjid Al Noor Society will retain over the new building. Unlike many similar developments, the mosque will not be part of a condominium strata, ensuring complete autonomy from the adjoining residential tower.
• No Loans, No Interest: The entire construction—estimated to cost around CAD 10 million—will be completed without any bank loans or interest-based financing.
• Estimated Asset Value: Upon completion, the total value of the mosque’s assets is projected to reach between CAD 27 to 30 million.
• Independent Governance: The Masjid Al Noor Board will maintain full managerial control, free from external influence or commercial entanglement.
“This is more than just a building — it’s a testament to what a faith-driven, self-sufficient community can achieve,” said Janif Mohammed. “Our goal is to create a spiritual sanctuary that will serve generations without financial burden or external control.”
Planning and Final Approvals
The Committee has submitted its plans to the City of Surrey and is working closely with the Planning Division to secure the necessary approvals. All figures presented are current estimates and may vary slightly depending on final municipal requirements.
Nevertheless, the excitement within the community is palpable. For Surrey’s Muslim population, the expanded Masjid Al Noor promises not just more space, but a lasting legacy rooted in faith, sustainability, and independence.
As Surrey continues its evolution into a major urban centre, Masjid Al Noor stands ready to grow with it—remaining a beacon of unity and resilience in the city’s vibrant multicultural fabric.
