ISLAMOPHOBIA- KATY MERRIFIED -OPEN LETTER TO THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF BC
10-14-2026
Dear Mr. Doerkson:
I am writing this open letter to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding the reported public statements about Islam made by Ms. Katy Merrifield, Campaign Director of the Conservative Party of BC. I respectfully urge you, as Interim Leader, to address this matter seriously and take appropriate action to uphold the principles of respect, inclusion, and accountability that should guide any political organization in a diverse and democratic society.
According to the concerns raised by Muslim community, on June 17, 2026, Ms. Merrifield reportedly published a social media post stating “F-ck Islam,” described Islam as an “abhorrent ideology,” and called for its expulsion in the name of defending Western civilization. Although she reportedly deleted the post within hours, she subsequently reposted a message by writer Meghan Murphy describing Islam as “a literal rape culture.”
If accurately reported, these statements raise serious concerns that go beyond legitimate debate about religion, ideology, or public policy. Criticizing specific practices, addressing sexual violence, or challenging extremism is entirely legitimate in a democratic society. However, condemning an entire faith and portraying it as inherently associated with sexual violence risks stigmatizing millions of peaceful Muslims, including the many families who contribute to the social, economic, cultural, and civic life of British Columbia.
Islam is practised by a diverse community of British Columbians who, like their fellow citizens, deserve dignity, equality, and freedom from prejudice. Generalizations that associate an entire religious community with criminal or abusive behaviour are unfair and divisive. Calls to expel a religion also raise troubling questions about whether the people who practise that faith are being made to feel unwelcome in the society they call home.
I recognize that Ms. Merrifield has reportedly spoken from the perspective of a survivor of sexual violence. I extend my sincere compassion to her and to all survivors of sexual violence. Their experiences deserve to be heard, respected, and taken seriously. Sexual violence must be condemned unequivocally, and perpetrators must be held accountable. At the same time, compassion for survivors and the pursuit of justice must not become grounds for condemning an entire religious community. We can stand firmly against sexual violence while rejecting prejudice and collective blame.
The responsibilities of a Campaign Director are particularly significant. Such a position involves shaping political messaging, influencing campaign strategy, and setting expectations for candidates and campaign representatives. Individuals serving in these roles should be held to standards of professionalism, sound judgment, and respect for the diverse communities they seek to engage.
Political leadership requires more than the removal of a controversial social media post. It requires a clear demonstration that public statements targeting religious communities are taken seriously and that accountability is applied consistently, regardless of an individual's position within the party.
The reported remarks have caused considerable concern and hurt among members of the Muslim community. Many Muslims may reasonably interpret such statements as an attack not merely on religious ideas but also on their identity, dignity, and place in Canadian society. As a community member who values peaceful coexistence, democratic participation, and mutual respect, I believe these concerns deserve a thoughtful and unequivocal response.
British Columbia is home to people of many faiths, cultures, and backgrounds. Political parties have an important responsibility to foster constructive dialogue, protect the dignity of all communities, and demonstrate that disagreement does not require hostility or discrimination. Public confidence in a political organization depends not only on its policies but also on the conduct and values demonstrated by those entrusted with leadership.
In light of the seriousness of these reported statements, I respectfully call upon you to:
1. Remove Ms. Katy Merrifield from her position as Campaign Director of the Conservative Party of BC, following an appropriate review of the reported statements.
2. Publicly reaffirm the party's commitment to religious freedom, equality, and respect for all British Columbians, including Muslim communities.
3. Establish clear standards of conduct and accountability for party officials, campaign personnel, and candidates concerning public statements about religious and cultural communities.
4. Engage in meaningful dialogue with Muslim community representatives to address the concerns raised and help restore trust.
These requests are not intended to restrict legitimate criticism, suppress freedom of expression, or prevent open discussion of difficult social issues. Rather, they are a call for responsible leadership and a clear distinction between constructive criticism and broad statements that may foster hostility toward an entire religious community.
I hope you will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves. The Conservative Party of BC has an opportunity to demonstrate that its commitment to public service extends to all British Columbians, irrespective of their religion or background. Taking meaningful action would send a strong message that dignity, accountability, and mutual respect are not optional values in public life.
I remain hopeful that this matter can be addressed through principled leadership and meaningful engagement. However, restoring confidence will require more than assurances; it will require credible action.
I invite you and the party leadership to reflect carefully on the impact of these reported statements and to take the steps necessary to demonstrate that every community in British Columbia deserves to be treated with fairness and respect.
Sincerely,
Muhammad Afzal Malik
Community Activist
Surrey, British Columbia
