Ontario Judicial Appointments reflect Canadian Diversity
11-01-2016
October 31, 2016 – (OTTAWA) – Arif Virani, Member of Parliament for Parkdale–High Park, today issued the following statement:
“The recent appointment of Justice Jasmine Akbarali, who is of South Asian descent, to serve on Ontario’s superior court, is reflective of the Government of Canada’s strong and substantive commitment to promoting greater diversity in our courts of law across Canada, through the appointment of distinguished lawyers of the highest calibre.”
“Justice Akbarali was one of eight judicial appointees to the Ontario Superior Court, announced on October 20, 2016 by the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. The Minister also took this opportunity to announce changes made to the judicial appointments process to improve public confidence, increase openness and transparency and promote diversity. Each Judicial Advisory Committee will be mandated with identifying outstanding jurists from a wide range of backgrounds and practice areas, with a view of having a judiciary reflecting the diversity of Canadian society.”
“As both a lawyer and Member of Parliament I am keenly aware of how significant these changes will be. Canadians need to know the key decisions affecting their lives are being made by those who have first-hand knowledge of the challenges they face each day. Canadians recognize there can be no limits to what can be achieved when we embrace the value of diversity.”
“By recognizing and appointing deserving, qualified Canadians who are truly reflective of the diverse Canada we live in, we lay the foundations for all of us to reach our highest potential in every area of Canadian society.”
