World Hijab Day in Vancouver

The BC Muslim Board of Women’s Council hosted the World Hijab Day on March 4 2017 at the Riverside Signature Banquet Hall in Surrey. This was the first event of its kind in Vancouver and Nisha Zuber, the event MC, welcomed over 200 women in attendance.
The purpose of the women’s event was to bring more awareness and better understanding of the hijab within the Muslim community and the BC community at large. The event was attended by different faith groups, Muslim organizations, religious groups, and representatives of Women’s Council.
Education Director of Women’s Affairs, Sr. Zein Ali, presented a PowerPoint slide presentation titled “What is Hijab?” which addressed not only appearance, but also manners and behaviour. Ali noted that the deeper meaning of Hijab includes the way a person walks, speaks, looks and thinks, and forces a man to look at a women with respect rather than as an object. Several guests also discussed how modesty represents the crown of a Muslimah.
Award-winning CBC reporter Bal Brach and Zukhvinder Virk of the Multifaith Action Society shared their journeys of growing up in the Sikh faith, and Zarah Tinholt touched on Christian perspectives of head coverings and attire. Mary Nazmun also discussed her life in a Methodist orphanage and her conversion to Islam.
Many guests tried hijab and were offered it to be taken home.
