The Federal NDP: The Strongest Voice for Canadian Muslims on Parliament Hill
As Canada approaches the 2025 federal election, one party continues to stand out as the most vocal and consistent in advocating for Canadian Muslim communities both at home and abroad—the New Democratic Party.
A Proven Ally for Canadian Muslims
Jagmeet Singh and the federal NDP have emerged as the only political force that consistently raises the concerns of Canadian Muslims at the national level. Whether addressing domestic challenges such as Islamophobia or speaking out on international crises—most urgently, the ongoing genocide in Gaza—the NDP has ensured that Muslim voices are not ignored in federal politics.
Where other parties have stayed silent or offered vague platitudes, the NDP has taken bold, principled stances that reflect a commitment to justice, human rights, and accountability. Singh, alongside 27 of his fellow MPs, signed a pledge accusing Israel of committing genocide. This pledge goes beyond rhetoric—it calls for the recognition of a Palestinian state, increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, and protection for those who speak out against Israel’s occupation.
A Parliamentarian Who Speaks the Truth
During the French-language leaders’ debate on April 16, 2025, Jagmeet Singh confronted Liberal leader Mark Carney directly, asking him why he refused to call the atrocities in Gaza a genocide—a term now widely used by legal scholars and human rights bodies. Carney deflected, stating he would not “politicize” the situation, refusing to use the word genocide. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, meanwhile, has outright denied the genocide and defended Israel’s military actions.
Only Jagmeet Singh had the courage to speak plainly: “This is a genocide.”
Legislative Action: Beyond Words
In March 2024, the NDP introduced a symbolic motion in the House of Commons calling for Canada to officially recognize a Palestinian state. While the Liberal government responded with amendments that softened the original language, the motion marked a clear effort by the NDP to place Palestinian self-determination on the federal agenda.
The NDP has also been at the forefront of calling for a two-way arms embargo on Israel. MP Heather McPherson, the NDP’s foreign affairs critic, has been unequivocal in her condemnation of Canada’s ongoing arms trade with Israel. She warned that Canada’s inaction—and its loopholes allowing weapons to be sent via the U.S.—could make the country complicit in war crimes.
“Canada must not be fuelling the ongoing genocide in Gaza with Canadian-made weapons,” McPherson declared in Parliament.
Why It Matters Now
As the election nears, Muslim Canadians are being urged to support the party that has consistently spoken out in their defense and brought their concerns to Parliament. The NDP is not just offering symbolic support—it is demanding real change, accountability, and justice on issues that matter deeply to Muslim communities across the country.
In the face of denial, silence, and political hedging from other parties, the NDP has taken a stand. Now, it's time for Canadian Muslims to stand with them—to ensure their voices remain heard and their issues stay front and centre at the federal level.
